What no one tells you about setting boundaries

Everyone Talks about Boundaries - no one tells you how

Everyone talks about setting boundaries. No one actually tells you how...

If you've spent any time on social media, you've probably heard the advice: "Set better boundaries."

No one really talks about what a boundary actually is.

Or why, for some people, setting one feels almost impossible.

Because boundaries aren't simply about saying yes when you mean no.

They're about recognising when something doesn't feel right — and trusting yourself enough to do something about it.

They're about noticing the moment someone speaks to you with disrespect and deciding not to accept it.

They're about realising you've become the person who always compromises, always accommodates and always keeps the peace, while everyone else's needs come first.

They're about speaking up in a meeting when you have a different opinion instead of swallowing it for fear of other peoples' reactions

They're about telling a partner, friend or family member, "That isn't okay."

They're about having difficult conversations even if you might be perceived as creating conflict or labelled as a 'troublemaker'.

They're about recognising when your body is telling you something something is right but you just override it even though your gut feeling is always right.

Most people think boundaries begin with saying no.

But I think they begin much earlier.

They begin with believing that your needs matter just as much as everyone else's.

Because if you've spent years believing:

  • "Don't make a fuss."

  • "Keep the peace."

  • "Be a good girl."

  • "Don't answer back."

  • "Don't be difficult."

  • "Don't upset people."

...then every boundary you try to set will feel like you're doing something wrong.

Because your nervous system has learned that speaking up isn't safe.

That's why so many women don't struggle with boundaries because they want to just keep to the peace - they struggle because every boundary feels like it could cost them love, approval or belonging.

And that's a very different problem.

Real boundaries aren't about becoming cold, distant or selfish.

They're about becoming honest.

  • when something feels unfair.

  • when you're exhausted.

  • when your body is asking you to slow down.

  • when a relationship has become one-sided.

  • when your values are being compromised.

Sometimes, setting a boundary means saying no.

Sometimes it means asking for help.

Sometimes it means leaving.

Sometimes it means having a conversation you've been avoiding for years.

Sometimes it means disappointing someone else so you don't keep abandoning yourself.

I've learned that every boundary asks us the same question:

"Do you trust yourself enough to honour what you know is true?"

Because every time you ignore your intuition, stay silent to avoid conflict or minimise your own needs, you send yourself a message:

"Everyone else's comfort matters more than mine."

And over time, that becomes the way you live.

Boundaries aren't walls.

They're not about shutting people out.

They're the quiet, consistent decisions that teach people how you expect to be treated—and remind you that your needs, your voice and your wellbeing deserve to be respected too.

So perhaps the real question isn't...

"How do I get better at setting boundaries?"

Maybe it's...

"What have I been taught to believe about myself that makes having boundaries feel so unsafe in the first place?"

Boundaries aren't just saying yes when you mean no. They're about noticing when something doesn't feel right, your needs aren't being met and knowing you have the right to speak up

Treat yourself like the Goddess you are! What's one small boundary you can put in place today?
