What is Reverse SAD — and Could Ayurveda Be the Answer Nobody Told You About?
Feeling worse in summer than winter? You might have Reverse SAD. Discover what it is, why it happens and how Ayurveda can help you finally feel better this summer.

Everyone knows about SAD.
The winter blues. The low mood that arrives with the dark mornings and short days of November. The exhaustion, the withdrawal, the desperate counting down to spring.
But almost nobody talks about what happens to the women who feel exactly the same way in summer.
If you have been waiting for the sunshine to make you feel better — and it hasn't — this post is for you.
💡 Real talk: If you dread summer a little and secretly wonder what’s “wrong” with you, you are so not alone in this.
Because there is a little known reason for what you are feeling.
WHAT IS REVERSE SAD?
Reverse SAD — also known as Summer SAD or summer onset Seasonal Affective Disorder — is a recognised mood disorder that causes depressive symptoms during the warmer months rather than the winter.
It affects around 10% of people who experience SAD. And because summer is so strongly associated with happiness, holidays and feeling alive, the women who experience it almost always dismiss what they are feeling entirely.
You are not being dramatic. There is a real reason you don't cope well with summer. And you are not imagining it.
HOW REVERSE SAD FEELS — AND WHY IT IS DIFFERENT TO WINTER SAD
Winter SAD tends to look like low energy, oversleeping and withdrawal. The urge to hibernate.
Reverse SAD looks and feels completely different. And because it presents so differently — it is often missed entirely.
Here is how Reverse SAD tends to show up in daily life:
You cannot sleep even though you are exhausted.
The heat, the light coming through the curtains at 4am, the inability to cool down — your body is tired but your nervous system simply will not settle.
You feel agitated and on edge in a way you cannot explain.
Your appetite disappears. Food feels unappealing in the heat and you cannot work out what you actually want.
Your mood drops when everyone else's seems to lift. You watch the people around you thriving in the sunshine — the barbecues, the holidays, the effortless joy of it — but you feel completely disconnected from all of it.
You feel flat and unable to access whatever it is everyone else seems to feel when the sun comes out.
You feel isolated by it. Because summer is supposed to be the season when energy lifts.
WHY DOES REVERSE SAD HAPPEN?
The exact causes of Reverse SAD are still being researched but several factors may be at play:
💜The heat itself disrupts the nervous system. High temperatures are registered by the body as a form of stress — triggering the same stress response that activates during anxiety, overwhelm or difficult situations. For women whose nervous systems are already dysregulated, summer heat does not just make them warm. It tips them over.
💜Longer daylight hours disrupt the body's internal clock. The circadian rhythm — the internal system that governs sleep, mood and energy — is highly sensitive to light. Extended daylight hours in summer can disrupt this rhythm significantly, affecting sleep quality, mood regulation and energy levels in ways that compound through the season.
💜The social pressure of summer adds an invisible layer of stress. The expectation to be happy, to be outside, to be social, to look a certain way as layers of clothing come off but maybe you feel body conscious — all of this creates a specific kind of pressure that women carry quietly.
Ayurveda and Reverse SAD
Here is what is fascinating about Reverse SAD from an Ayurvedic perspective.
Ayurveda — the ancient Indian system of natural healing that has been understanding the relationship between seasons, bodies and wellbeing for thousands of years — already knew about this.
Because from an Ayurveda perspective Like increases like.
In Ayurveda, summer is Pitta season. Pitta is the energy of fire — governing heat, intensity, transformation and drive. And in summer, when the heat outside is at its peak, Pitta energy is amplified in everyone.
For women who already carry a dominant Pitta constitution — women who run warm, who feel things intensely, who are driven and sharp and can tip into irritability when depleted — summer turns the dial up on everything they are already experiencing.
But it also affects the other two dosha types in other ways:
A Vata woman — whose energy is governed by air and movement — can find summer's long days, disrupted routines and overstimulating social calendar scattering her energy in ways that create exactly the agitation, sleep disruption and anxiety that characterise Reverse SAD.
And a Kapha woman — whose energy is governed by earth and water — can find the heat amplifying a heaviness and low motivation that looks, from the inside, very much like the flatness of summer depression.
WHAT AYURVEDA RECOMMENDS FOR SUMMER MOOD AND NERVOUS SYSTEM SUPPORT
Cool the nervous system — not just the body
Reaching for a chilled drink or the nearest fan won't help if the nervous system is already dysregulated
For a quick way to cool down, slow the breath. Longer out than in. This speaks directly to the nervous system in a language it understands — and begins the regulation process from the inside.
💡 Pro Tip: Try a simple “in for 4, out for 6” breath when you feel wired and hot. It’s tiny, but it really adds up.
Protect your sleep environment like it matters
Disrupted sleep in summer is one of the primary drivers of both Reverse SAD and Pitta imbalance.
☀️ Cool your bedroom before you try to sleep in it. Avoid screens in the hour before bed — the blue light compounds the disruption of longer daylight hours.
☀️Avoid alcohol in the evening — it raises the body temperature, making sleep lighter and less restorative. And if you wake in the early hours — which is common in summer — know that this is your body processing and do not fight it.
Eat with the season — not against it
Heavy, rich food increases the internal heat load that summer is already creating.
🍉Lighter meals, cooling foods — cucumber, mint, coconut, sweet fruit like melon and pear — and plenty of cool water reduce what the body has to work against.
☕ Avoid caffeine before midday if possible. It amplifies the agitation that is already present in Reverse SAD and adds to the internal heat.
Give yourself permission to do less
Summer in the modern world is associated with doing more. More socialising. More outdoor activities. More of everything. But for women whose bodies and nervous systems are struggling with the season — this pressure to do more is one of the most significant contributors to how they feel.
In Ayurveda, rest in summer is medicine. Particularly in the peak heat hours between midday and three in the afternoon, do something gently and mindfully.
