Understanding Menopause Through an Ayurvedic Lens

What No One Tells you about the Menopause

For many women, menopause feels like a change — not just physically but also mentally and emotionally. You feel like the woman you were no longer exists. Once the ability to create new life fades away, it can feel like your purpose in life fades with it.

The physical symptoms - sleepless nights, the sudden waves of heat, the mood swings, and that feeling of slowly losing your identity… it can sometimes feel like your body is betraying you.

But what if, instead of fighting this change, you began to listen to what your body is trying to tell you?

Ayurveda — the ancient wisdom of life — invites us to see menopause not as a loss, but as a powerful rebirth.
A time to return to balance, nurture yourself deeply, and rediscover the woman you’ve always been. It's a transition into the Wise Woman Era - the Wise Woman you've become through life's trials and tribulations that you get to pass on to generations of women following you....

✨ The Ayurvedic View of Menopause

In Ayurveda, menopause is seen as a natural transition. Here in the West, we've been taught that Menopause is a taboo subject. One not to be talked about, mentioned. Doctors dismiss it as just one of those things and bat you away to just get on with it, leaving women in despair and with nowhere to turn. In recent years, we have seen a growing number of Menopause groups popping up, exactly for this reason.

In Ayurveda, it marks the shift from the pitta (fire and productivity) stage of life into vata (air and wisdom).

This transition brings movement, dryness, and change — the very qualities of vata dosha.
When vata rises out of balance, it can show up as:
🌬️ Hot flushes or night sweats
🌬️ Anxiety, restlessness, or insomnia
🌬️ Dryness of the skin or hair
🌬️ Feeling ungrounded or forgetful

Ayurveda teaches that these symptoms aren’t random — they’re messages from your body asking for grounding, nourishment, and stillness.

🌸 The Call to Slow Down

For so long, women have been conditioned to give, to do, to achieve. This goes against what our bodies naturally ask us to do. It's the menoPAUSE, not the menoDO... During menstruation our body's natural state of being is to pause, yet in today's modern life we are forced to work against our natural rhythms at times it's natural to pause and slow down. This is our natural state of being, and is the reason so many of us burn out.

Menopause asks you to soften, to receive, to be.

This is a time to listen to your body’s whispers:
💫 More rest, less rushing
💫 Warm, cooked foods over cold salads
💫 Gentle movement like yoga or walking instead of pushing through high-intensity workouts
💫 Nurturing yourself with nature's medicine such as oils and herbs to soothe and nourish the nervous system

When you begin to align with what your body truly needs, menopause becomes less of a battle — and more of an awakening.

🌺 The Wisdom Within

In Ayurvedic philosophy, every woman carries her own innate wisdom — her inner healer.
Menopause is the moment that wisdom comes forward, inviting you to reconnect with yourself in a deeper way.

It’s the season of the sage.
A time when the outer roles you’ve played — mother, partner, caretaker — fall away, and your truest self begins to shine through.

You are not “losing” your femininity — you are becoming more of it.
Menopause is the body’s sacred initiation into your next chapter

🌿 Bringing Ayurveda into Your Daily Life

You may already be using Ayurvedic wisdom without even realising it... But here are some simple rituals you can apply:

🌼 Herbal teas: There are many herbal teas that can support hormonal balance and ease heat.
🌸 Essential oils: Essential oils are known to balance emotions and bring calm. Use the ones that you are drawn to are these will be the ones you need. (Never apply essential oils directly onto the skin though if using in skin care - always dilute them with a carrier oil)
🕯️ Restorative practices: Gentle yoga or exercise can restore balance and calm the nervous system

These small acts of care help you come home to yourself — gently, day by day.

💎 A New Way Forward

Menopause is not an ending — it’s an evolution.
It’s your invitation to reconnect with your body, honour your rhythm, and rediscover the woman within.

Through Ayurveda, you can learn to understand your symptoms as guidance — messages from your body asking for balance, softness, and care.

This is your time to slow down. To listen. To nurture the pearl of wisdom within you. 🌷
